Coming soon to America: widespread fear, angry debate and frequent name-calling all because of a new movie about the life of Charles Darwin and his writing of On the Origin of Species. This film has been in release around the world for some time now but because of controversy and fears of a public relations battle with the “religious right” the film struggled to find a US distributor (interestingly enough it will be distributed by New Market films which also handled Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ). Based on a book by the conservationist Randall Keynes (the great-great grandson of Darwin), the movie explores the “creation” of Darwin’s book and the emotional, marital and parental dynamics which were birthed from the tensions of publishing a book which was influenced by his daughter’s death and directly contradicted his wife’s faith.

The controversy and heated debate will be nothing new in the U.S. but not having seen the film yet, what I’m left to wonder is whether or not the church can engage supporters of evolution with both faithfulness to the Biblical teaching of creation and the winsome grace that treats even those who disagree with dignity and respect.
