Music with Texture: Randall Goodgame & Andy Osenga

Randall Goodgame and Andrew Osenga performing together.
Through their writing with the band Caedmon’s Call I was a fan of Andrew Osenga and Randall Goodgame before I ever knew their names. The first time I first heard Randall Goodgame’s songwriting on the “Back Home” album released in 2003 I was hooked. His lyrics, like those in the song, “Hands of the Potter” spoke directly to my struggle to be an authentic follower of Jesus:
Lord if I’m the clay then I’ve been left out in the sun
Cracked and dry, like mud from the sty
Still clinging to the prodigal sonBut I’m on my way back home
Yes I’m on my way back homeInto the hands
That made the water from the wine
Into the hands
The hands of The Potter
So I was thrilled to discover that Randall had released music on his own, most specifically his recent work “Bluebird.” Though he is a storyteller about loss, pain and hope, he also writes about every day occurrences like hearing a bluebird keeping him up at night or experiencing the love of his wife with melodies that invite me to experience rest in the One who loves me.
Randall partnered with Andrew Osenga on much of the songwriting for Caedmon’s Call’s album “Share the Well”, an album with international sounds which also happens to be incredibly fun to sing along with. Andy, through his songwriting, is quietly contributing to the work of a number of artists in Nashville such as Johhny Diaz, JJ Heller and Andrew Peterson. And, like Randall, he continues to write, produce and perform music that in my opinion, far exceeds much of what is out there in the world of Christian music in it’s texture and lyrical creativity.
Below is a conversation between Andy and Randall about the writing process. Enjoy and support their work!
